Her journey is a powerful reflection of courage, vision, and purpose-driven success

Gunjan ji, you began your career in the high-stakes world of sales before becoming a powerhouse in real estate and event management. What was that “moment” that convinced you to pivot and build your own empire?
My professional journey is a reflection of resilience, continuous learning, and the courage to step beyond comfort zones. Starting in the hospitality sector in 2009, I learned that I had a natural gift for communication and problem-solving. However, the true pivot came when I realized that to provide the best possible future for my children as a single mother, I needed to embrace bigger challenges. Transitioning into international education and business development was about proving that my skills were transferable and that I could lead in any industry I chose to enter.
Your company, Defantasia, has become a hallmark for impactful platforms. What is your “secret” for conceptualizing events and award shows that truly resonate with an audience?
The secret lies in storytelling and authenticity. Whether it is an international education seminar or a corporate event, I believe in connecting with the “why.” My background in managing guest relations taught me that people don’t just remember what you did; they remember how you made them feel. By focusing on empowerment and purpose, especially for women and students, the resonance happens naturally.

You handle complex liaisoning and regulatory coordination for land projects across India. For those who see only the finished building, what is the most challenging aspect of the “behind-the-scenes” legal and regulatory landscape?
The most challenging aspect is balancing the technical requirements with human relationships. Much like navigating the admissions process for international schools, real estate and land projects require immense patience and meticulous attention to detail. You have to be a bridge between different stakeholders, ensuring that every legal box is checked while maintaining the momentum of the project.
Looking back at the early days of your career, how did you navigate the pressure of professional growth while ensuring your personal responsibilities remained a priority?
It was a constant balancing act of discipline and sacrifice. In those early years at Hotel Eqbal and later in sales, I had to be a “Boss Lady” at work and a source of soft strength at home. I chose to turn my responsibilities as a single mother into my fuel rather than a burden. I wanted my children to see that professional excellence and personal devotion are not mutually exclusive; they can coexist if you have enough courage.
Your work with the Shaurya Achievers Society for acid attack survivors and the differently-abled is deeply moving. Was there a specific encounter or story that ignited this lifelong passion for social advocacy?
My passion for advocacy stems from my own experience with struggle. When you face life’s difficulties alone, you develop a deep empathy for others fighting their own battles. Seeing the resilience of women who have been through immense trauma—much like the single mothers I write for—reminds me that the human spirit is unbreakable. My advocacy is my way of giving back the strength I had to find within myself.

You’ve received numerous accolades over the years. Beyond the trophies and titles, which recognition felt like a true validation of your soul’s work?
While professional milestones are gratifying, the true validation comes from the quiet moments: a student successfully reaching their dream university, or a woman telling me that my story gave her the courage to leave a difficult situation. Knowing that I have served as a “guiding light” for others is the only recognition that truly satisfies my soul.
O2 Builders emphasizes sustainable, nature-focused living. Do you believe India is ready for a “Green Revolution” in real estate, or is it still a niche luxury?
India is more than ready. Just as we are seeing a shift toward more “spiritual” and holistic ways of living in our personal lives, people are seeking that same harmony in their physical environments. Sustainability is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for the future of our children.
With 26 years of experience, you’ve seen India’s skyline change literally and figuratively. What is one trend in the current market that you think is being overlooked by most investors?
I believe the “human element” and specialized consulting are often overlooked in favor of pure numbers. In the education and real estate sectors alike, investors often miss the long-term value of community-building and ethical guidance. People are looking for transparency and a sense of purpose in where they put their money and their trust.
You’ve mentored over 10,000 professionals. If you had to boil down your sales and marketing wisdom into one “Golden Rule” for a first-time entrepreneur, what would it be?
Believe in yourself more than your product.* If you move with confidence and integrity, others will follow. Whether you are selling a hotel room, a study-abroad program, or a vision for a company, your personal conviction is what actually closes the deal.
When you face a significant business setback today, what is the first thing you do to regroup and stay focused?
I lean into my spirituality. It helps me heal, find peace, and realize that a mistake or a hurdle is just a lesson in a larger journey. I take a moment to breathe, look at my children for inspiration, and then I make a bold decision to move forward. A “Boss Lady” doesn’t let a setback define her; she lets it refine her.

What is one “legacy project” you hope to leave behind that will impact the industry long after your next phase?
My legacy will be the empowerment of women through education and writing. I want to leave behind a world where single mothers don’t feel defined by their struggles, but are celebrated for their independence and strength. If my articles and mentorship can spark that change, that is the legacy I want.

Looking at the road ahead, what is the one mountain you haven’t climbed yet that you are most excited to conquer?
I am excited to continue expanding my global footprint, bridging the gap between Indian students and international opportunities on an even larger scale. There is always more to learn, more lives to touch, and more stories to write. The mountain I am climbing now is one of total independence and global influence.
