Our readers would like to know about your academic achievements. Please share.
My academic qualifications include a B.Com degree from Delhi University and a two-year Diploma in Nursery Teacher’s Training Course from Bal Bharati Public School, Pusa Road, Delhi. Following that, I served as a Teacher for 12 years at Ramjas Day Boarding School, Anand Parbat, Delhi.
How challenging was your professional journey from primary school teacher to being an entrepreneur?
My journey from being a Primary School Teacher to becoming an Entrepreneur has been fascinating. After my divorce, I felt the need for a fresh start and a desire to achieve something significant in life. Fortunately, I got an opportunity to move to Mumbai, which I gladly accepted. Upon arriving in the city, I delved into politics and ventured into Bollywood. The journey has been both beautiful and challenging. Fortunately, I received immense support from my in-laws, who stood by me since my divorce. My father-in-law and mother-in-law, originally residing in Delhi, decided to relocate to Mumbai to be with me and my children. With their support, I left my teaching job and embarked on this new chapter of entrepreneurship.
How would you define the uniqueness and appeal of your organization Punjabi Global Foundation?
The Punjabi Global Foundation, my NGO, stands out from others due to its unique characteristics. Unlike many NGOs, we lack 80G certificates, which means we do not receive CSR funds to aid the less fortunate. However, we have devised an effective method of using a WhatsApp group with influential members to collect funds and provide assistance to those in need.
Our efforts extend to various areas, including orphanages and old age homes, where we organize cultural events to promote the rich Punjabi culture. Kirtan Darbars and other initiatives have been part of our endeavours to bring about positive changes in society. Over the years, from 2012 to 2023, we have proudly completed 300 projects under the banner of the Punjabi Global Foundation.
As a social entrepreneur what challenges do you face while supporting those in need?
As social entrepreneurs, our main challenge lies in the lack of funds, particularly after the impact of COVID-19. People have become less inclined to donate, which has affected our ability to help others. Nonetheless, we are committed to making a difference and strive to assist in the best way possible, whether through monetary contributions, goods, or our dedicated efforts. It is important to note that this endeavour is far from easy, but we persist in our mission.
What are your top most priorities as a politician. What is your current position in this field?
Currently, I hold the position of Vice-president in the Mumbai Regional Mahila Congress Committee, where my primary focus is on empowering women.
I strive to assist as many individuals as possible within my abilities and am committed to being recognized as a social activist or worker rather than a conventional politician. My main goal is to work at the grassroots level and contribute to the betterment of society.
How do you manage your political responsibilities along with various other creative things that you do?
As a single woman and parent, I find it relatively easy to manage my time. My motto is “Nothing is impossible,” and I firmly believe that confidence, zeal, and enthusiasm are key to success in any endeavour. Whether it’s politics, family life, children, or social activities, I prioritize and balance everything according to my convenience and availability. Giving time to what truly matters is my approach to each day.
Could you please highlight your achievements as an actor in the entertainment industry?
My preference lies in creating theme-based films. Notably, one of my acclaimed works is “Rajjo,” a remarkable film for PTC Box Office.
Additionally, I directed a documentary called “Odyssey in Epoch,” focusing on the Koli community from Madh in Versova. As a result of this documentary, they received funding for their hospitals and schools.
Who inspired you to get into social service?
In Sikhism, the concept of “Sarbat da Bhala” emphasizes helping everyone, and the idea of serving others is ingrained in our nature. Our inspiration comes from the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib and Guru Nanak Devji. Like our Gurus who assisted the less fortunate, I aspire to contribute to my country and people. Additionally, I draw inspiration from the legendary figure, Mother Teresa, whose impactful work I have admired since childhood. With all my dedication, I aim to bring about positive changes in society.
