Hard work and resilience are essential; success doesn’t come without challenges, and each fall is a chance to learn and grow.
Rutvi Chauhan
Rutvi Chauhan, a physical therapist by profession and an inspiring advocate for women, has captured international attention after her stunning victory as Mrs. Universe USA 2024. Born and raised in a small town in Gujarat, India, Rutvi moved to the United States in 2010, where she built a successful career while fulfilling a childhood passion for pageantry. Competing against nearly 100 women from around the globe, Rutvi achieved a 6th-place finish and was bestowed with the coveted Mrs. Magnificent title. Her accomplishments were further amplified when she received the Lifetime Presidential Achievement Award, personally honored by President Joe Biden, and was selected to walk in Paris Fashion Week, solidifying her impact in the fashion and pageantry worlds. Rutvi Chauhan’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, proving that no matter where you begin, with dedication and support, anything is possible.
What inspired you to move to the United States in 2010, and how did you adapt to the new culture?
I moved to the U.S. in 2010, inspired by my sister’s studies in Australia and my father’s encouragement to explore the world. Fascinated by foreign cultures and opportunities, I adapted like many newcomers. I lived with a single American mother with her 3 daughters and 4 pets in a small nook, using an air mattress and my two bags as a closet. Cooking simple meals like KHICHDI every day helped me stay focused on clearing my licensing test quickly so I could start my career as a PHYSICAL THERAPIST. Each challenge became a stepping stone in my journey. it was tough learning to DRIVE , adapting to Michigan’s COLD WEATHER as I had moved during winter time. but like every other struggling person’s story, I got accustomed too.Addressing elders by their names feels unfamiliar to me, and even now, I prefer adding prefixes, as it aligns better with who I am.
What sparked your interest in pageantry, and how did your husband’s encouragement help you take the first step?
I have always been drawn to pageants, inspired by icons like Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, and Priyanka Chopra—women who brought pride to India and became Bollywood stars. Watching them growing up made me dream of being on stage, dancing, and enjoying the spotlight. Although modeling and pageants weren’t popular career paths in the ’90s, I chose a stable path in healthcare as a straight-A student. But my passion for the stage never faded, and with my husband’s support, I entered my first pageant in 2017 and won first runner-up. From then on, I balanced a career in fashion and modeling after work and on weekends, while being a mom. At 37, as a mother of two, I achieved my dream and won the title of Mrs. UNIVERSE USA and TOP 6 MRS UNIVERSE.
How did you balance preparing for the Mrs. Universe USA pageant with your full-time job, raising two children, and managing household responsibilities?
It hasn’t been easy, let me tell you. Both my husband and I are ambitious—he’s pursuing his dreams as much as I am mine. Currently, he’s a full-time petroleum engineer and a student at Northwestern Kellogg, one of the top business schools in the U.S., alongside names like Harvard and Oxford. Meanwhile, I am working as a physical therapist, preparing for pageants, and managing modeling ,all while raising our two kids.
Thankfully, our parents took turns visiting from India to help with childcare and the household, which made a huge difference. But honestly, our routine is a product of careful planning and strong time management, something I take pride in. I am an organizer at heart; I make lists and follow through. We don’t have a cook, nanny, or trainer, so it’s all on us and family. We share responsibilities, covering for each other whenever needed. It’s not impossible, but it’s definitely not easy either.
How much you are satisfied with this position?
Every contestant enters with the goal of winning the crown, and I was no different. But some things are beyond our control. What truly satisfies me is that I gave it my 100% and stayed true to myself throughout the entire 10 days. I didn’t fake anything, nor did I overdo or underdo anything- I was simply Rutvi. Staying authentic was essential to me and my values. So, being placed 6th feels fulfilling, and I am genuinely happy for those who made the top 5.
How do you plan to continue making a positive impact through your platform?
As a mom, healthcare professional, career woman, wife, and a small-town girl from India who moved to the U.S. for better opportunities, standing among 100 nations on the Mrs. Universe stage has been a huge accomplishment. I aim to lead by example, showing young girls that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Imagine an introverted, straight-A student now a woman standing confidently before the world—that’s what I want to inspire in others. Hard work and resilience are essential; success doesn’t come without challenges, and each fall is a chance to learn and grow. My journey with Mrs. Universe has transformed me for the better, and I hope to impact others with the same fierce determination that’s fueled my path.
How did it feel to win the title of Mrs. Universe USA 2024 and represent the United States on the world stage?
Representing the USA is a dream for many, and I took on that role with pride and honor. I believe I did well, and I couldn’t have done it without my sponsors, supporters, and family. The U.S. has given me so much, and this was my way of giving back. As an immigrant, building a successful career, home, and family here is my American dream come true. For me, this opportunity was not only an honor but also a responsibility—one I am proud to have fulfilled .Having the U.S. flag draped around me as I left for South Korea, carried it throughout my time there, and on stage when I placed in the top 6 was incredibly fulfilling. It made me feel proud beyond words, and I believe everyone watching back home felt that pride too. My patients, especially, were thrilled and so proud of me. This journey was a chance to honor the U.S. and give back in a small way for all that it has given me
Recently you have participated in Mrs Universe pageant in South Korea. How was your experience during the event while communicating with beauty queens across the globe?
Honestly, at first, just imagining the whole experience of being surrounded by beauties from all around the globe was a bit nerve-wracking. But once I met my sister queens, I found they were just like me—focused, friendly, family-oriented, and incredibly hardworking. We bonded well, supported each other daily, and had an amazing time together. I learned about so many cultures and dances while also sharing my own. It was truly a life-changing and unforgettable experience. Now we all have a home in all the countries. we sang , we danced, we had lots of fun and memories to cherish the whole lifetime.
What were the challenges for you to achieve the prestigious 6th position in Mrs Universe pageant.
One of the biggest challenges I faced at Mrs. Universe was waiting on my national costume, which was held at South Korean customs and wasn’t released until just hours before the competition. For the first five days, I tried everything to retrieve it, and I cried a lot because I had worked so hard to be there. The thought of missing out on winning simply because I couldn’t present my costume was heartbreaking. My fellow queens were incredibly supportive, comforting me when I almost gave up. Finally, thanks to the Mrs. Universe organization staff, who drove me to the airport and helped me with customs paperwork, I was able to collect my costume just in time. I can’t imagine what I would have done without their help and my friends’ support—that was truly my biggest challenge in the pageant.
As you are an Indian face with natural beauty. How much potential you see in young Indian beauty queens. How they can achieve their goals in an international platforms?
Whether Indian or not, it’s always your confidence that shines on stage- the aura you bring, the smile that captivates, and the charisma that wins the judges over. Indian beauty queens have incredible potential; our rich skin tone is beautiful, and I am proud of mine. Representing a nation where I am a minority was such a proud moment for me.
To young Indian girls, my message is this: be confident in your own skin, and never feel the need to be anyone else. Know your self-worth. Indians are making waves globally, and I’m glad to have contributed my part. With confidence and authenticity, we can shine and bring pride to our nation.
What is the secret of your fitness and natural smile always?
The secret to my fitness is consistency and a balanced approach. As a physical therapist, I understand the importance of not just working out but also nurturing my body with the right nutrition, rest, and mindful practices. Regular exercise, a mix of strength and flexibility training, and a balanced diet help me stay energized and strong. As for my smile, it’s a reflection of the gratitude I feel each day. My family, my work, and the causes I am passionate about bring me genuine joy. I believe that when you are truly content and surround yourself with positivity, it naturally shows in your smile.
What was going through your mind when you received the Lifetime Presidential Achievement Award from President Joe Biden?
If I could scream right now, I would! Receiving the Lifetime Presidential Achievement Award from President Joe Biden was a surreal and thrilling moment—it’s one of the highest honors one can receive. It didn’t happen as originally planned, with officials presenting it at City Hall, but Dr. Kathy from Collaborating Voices went above and beyond. She met me at the airport at 3 a.m., just as I was about to clear security for my flight. In a truly cinematic, Bollywood-style surprise, she pulled me out of line and presented me with the award and medal.
Dr. Kathy had actually planned a larger event with media coverage, but I had to reschedule my flight due to a delay. Despite all the changes, she ensured I received the award, sending me off with so much love and a beautiful surprise. And on my return, even though my schedule shifted again, she greeted me with the certificate. Her dedication made the whole experience even more unforgettable.
Domestic violence awareness and cancer support are causes close to your heart. Can you share a personal experience that drives your advocacy?
As a physical therapist, my journey with domestic violence awareness began during my internship in the burns ward of a hospital in Surat, Gujarat. I will never forget one patient, Nita Ben (name changed), who suffered 75% burns after her husband set her on fire. She wanted to end her suffering by jumping from the hospital’s 10th floor, and tragically, she passed away the next day due to severe lung damage. Her story shook me deeply, but at just 18, I felt helpless , but took legal action. This platform of MRS UNIVERSE that supports domestic violence survivors allows me to join hands with thousands of women worldwide, spreading awareness that they deserve lives filled with love, kindness, and respect—not violence. Cancer support is also close to my heart, with cancer warriors and survivors in my family who have endured the intense treatments and surgeries involved. Their resilience is remarkable. I also had a personal scare when my son was just three months old and was initially suspected of having leukemia. This experience made me want to support cancer foundations and those affected by cancer in any way I can.
What’s next for you after your reign as Mrs. Universe USA top 6?
After my journey as Mrs. Universe USA and placing in the top 6, I am excited to continue making an impact. I plan to deepen my advocacy for domestic violence awareness and cancer support, using my platform to reach more people and drive change. I will also focus on inspiring young women to chase their dreams, no matter their background or challenges, just as I did. Modeling and public speaking will remain key parts of my journey, helping me connect with and motivate others. And, of course, balancing it all with my roles as a mom, healthcare professional, and wife! This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
How do you stay grounded and humble amidst all the attention and accolades?
Staying grounded comes naturally when I remember my journey and the people who have supported me. Growing up in a small town and working hard to build my career taught me to value every achievement and recognize that nothing comes without effort and support. My family keeps me humble- they remind me of my roots and the importance of staying true to myself. Being a mom and a healthcare professional also gives me perspective; caring for others brings me joy and keeps my focus on what truly matters. Ultimately, the attention and accolades are meaningful, but they are just one part of my purpose to serve, inspire, and make a difference.
What role do you think pageants play in promoting women’s empowerment and social causes?
Pageants play a significant role in empowering women and amplifying social causes. By offering a global platform, they give women the chance to share their personal stories, stand for issues they believe in, and inspire others with their journeys. These competitions encourage self-confidence, public speaking, and personal growth, which are all vital for empowering women to lead and influence positive change. Moreover, pageants promote a wide range of social causes, from education and healthcare to environmental and human rights issues. Contestants become ambassadors for these causes, helping to raise awareness and bring attention to underrepresented issues on an international stage. Through their reach, they can mobilize support and inspire action, contributing meaningfully to the global conversation on social responsibility and empowerment.
Are there any specific projects or collaborations you are excited about in the near future?
Yes, I am excited about several upcoming projects and collaborations! One of my main focuses is expanding my work with Collaborating Voices to raise awareness about domestic violence and provide resources for survivors. Working with Dr. Kathy Tatum and a network of inspiring advocates, we aim to reach more communities and amplify support for those affected. I am also planning to use my platform to encourage young women to pursue their dreams confidently, whether through speaking engagements, mentorship programs, or workshops. Each project allows me to blend my passions for healthcare, advocacy, and inspiring others. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of these meaningful causes. I also have several exciting pageant and fashion-related projects on the horizon! These will allow me to continue representing and connecting with inspiring individuals in the industry, while furthering my passion for modeling and empowering others. With each of these opportunities, I am eager to expand my reach and make a meaningful impact in the world of pageantry and fashion.
