As Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University marks its historic 75th Foundation Day,

Ms. Khushboo Agrahari had the conversation with the esteemed Vice Chancellor, Professor Poonam Tandon, for an in-depth conversation on the university’s remarkable journey and its ambitious roadmap for the future. From its inception in 1951 with a vision to serve the educational needs of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, to its current stature as a NAAC A++ accredited, Category-1 UGC-recognized institution, the university has emerged as a beacon of academic excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. In this special interview, Vice Chancellor Tandon reflects on the institution’s legacy, recent achievements, integration of modern disciplines, and its expanding global footprint—discussing a dynamic institution poised to shape the next generation of scholars, leaders, and global citizens.

As Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University celebrates its 75th Foundation Day, how do you reflect on its journey from inception to becoming one of the key institutions in Uttar Pradesh?

As Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University celebrates its 75th Foundation Day, it is a moment to proudly reflect on its inspiring evolution into one of the premier centers of higher education in Uttar Pradesh. The foundation of the institution was laid with visionary foresight by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, in 1951, aiming to serve the educational aspirations of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Rooted in the spiritually and intellectually vibrant soil of Gorakhpur—a land enriched by the legacies of Gautam Buddha, Sant Kabir, Guru Gorakhnath, and revolutionaries like Ram Prasad Bismil—the university has grown into a symbol of academic excellence and inclusive education.

Spread over 190.96 acres, the university has expanded impressively from just a handful of departments at its inception. Today, it encompasses 8 faculties and 40 departments, offering over 200 undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral programs. The introduction of new-age courses, interdisciplinary programs, and research initiatives reflects its commitment to academic diversity and innovation.

Over 12,000 students reside and study on campus, while nearly 2 lakh students are enrolled through its 355 affiliated colleges, with more than 50% of them being women—a testament to its commitment to gender inclusion.

Guided by its noble motto, “आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यंतु विश्वतः”—“Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions”—the university embraces diversity of thought, culture, and values.

This robust academic growth has been matched by a deep commitment to societal development, inclusivity, and the promotion of Indian knowledge systems. Thousands of students from diverse social and economic backgrounds have passed through its halls, making significant contributions to various sectors of the nation.

With a state-of-the-art automated central library, ICT-enabled classrooms, advanced laboratories, innovation and incubation centers, strong student support systems, excellent sports and health facilities, and a gender-sensitive, ragging-free campus, the university stands today as a model of modern, holistic education.

It has earned national and international acclaim for high-quality research, innovative teaching practices, community engagement, and effective placement support. These achievements are reflected in its highest NAAC accreditation of A++ and its recognition as a Category-1 university by the UGC.

As the university enters its Amrit Mahotsav year, it stands as a symbol of academic achievement in eastern Uttar Pradesh also as a dynamic institution prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century with innovation, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose.

The Indian diaspora represents a vast reservoir of knowledge, experience, and global perspective. At Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, we warmly welcome their mentorship, expertise, and collaborative spirit. Whether through virtual lectures, joint research projects, support for academic chairs, or the establishment of innovation and incubation labs, their involvement can create meaningful bridges between global advancements and local progress. We are also in the process of developing a structured alumni-diaspora engagement program to ensure sustained, impactful collaboration that benefits our students, faculty, and the broader academic ecosystem.

What are some of the most significant achievements of the university in the past decade?

In the past decade, DDU Gorakhpur University has experienced significant growth and achieved several milestones. One of the most notable accomplishments is the university’s recognition as a UGC Category-1 University, which is a testament to its academic quality and research output. Additionally, it has gained national and international acknowledgment, with rankings in the QS World South Asia Ranking and the Nature Index, further establishing its reputation as a leading academic institution.

It has also embraced technological progress by becoming one of the first institutions to use Blockchain technology for issuing certificates, which shows its forward-thinking approach.

Significant funding support has played a role in the university’s success, particularly the `100 crore grant under the PM-USHAs scheme, which has contributed to the development of infrastructure and research initiatives. Academic reforms, including the implementation of the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), have enhanced student flexibility, while the introduction of interdisciplinary programs like Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Studies aligns the curriculum with current global trends.

Technological advancements at the university have been another key achievement. The establishment of a digital library, the integration of smart classrooms, and enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity have greatly improved the overall learning environment. Furthermore, the creation of the Centre for Societal Development has facilitated outreach programs, focusing on social welfare and sustainable development, ensuring that the university’s impact extends beyond the campus to the community at large.

What is the university’s vision for the next decade, particularly in enhancing student education, research, and global exposure?

The vision of DDU Gorakhpur University for the next decade is rooted in its commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and global engagement. The university is dedicated to creating a comprehensive and future-ready learning environment that empowers students to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

In the realm of student education, the university is expanding its curriculum to include cutting-edge disciplines such as data science, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and sustainable development, encouraging interdisciplinary learning to build versatile skill sets. The establishment of the university’s first multimedia studio in 2024 marks a significant leap toward digital education, enabling faculty to develop SWAYAM and MOOC-based courses and supporting the university’s mission to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) through blended and remote learning.

In terms of research, the university envisions becoming a hub of high-impact, collaborative scholarship. It is actively strengthening infrastructure—evident in the creation of a Census Data Research Workstation, the launch of a modern evaluation center (`8.2 crore) and upcoming Central Instrumentation Facility.

Strategic partnerships are central to this vision. In 2024 alone, the university signed eight international MoUs with institutions such as Lumbini Buddhist University, Tribhuvan University, Gandaki University, and Global Peace University (USA), among others. Overall, the university has signed MoUs with national and international academic institutions, research centers, and industry partners, facilitating knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and joint academic initiatives. Two major international conferences—GUIC-2024 and the India-Nepal Symposium on Materials Science—were co-hosted, reflecting the university’s proactive global engagement.

Efforts to internationalize the campus are already yielding results. The university shared its admission brochure across 70 countries through Indian embassies, received over 100 applications from 12 countries, and admitted 13 international students this year alone. The increasing presence of students from other Indian states and abroad signals a growing reputation and outreach. Distinguished global scholars and researchers—from the USA, Austria, Germany, Sri Lanka, and Nepal—have visited the campus, enriching the academic ecosystem through lectures, workshops, and faculty development programs.

Looking ahead, the university plans to deepen its global exposure through student and faculty exchange programs, international workshops, and cross-border research projects. Ultimately, the vision is to establish DDU Gorakhpur University as a national and global leader in education and research, one that prepares students to be thoughtful, skilled, and responsible global citizens.

How does the university plan to integrate new-age disciplines such as artificial intelligence, green technologies, and digital learning into its academic programs?

These MoUs ensure curriculum enrichment, practical exposure, and opportunities for collaborative research and internships in cutting-edge fields. To support these disciplines, the university has invested significantly in ICT-enabled smart classrooms and world quality labs in our Institute of Engineering and Technology and Institute of Agriculture and Natural Sciences.

Furthermore, in line with its commitment to sustainable development, the university is integrating green technologies into its research agenda and curriculum.
