They tend to choose educational books and publications over novels and tabloids.
Reading also has multiple health benefits associated with it like – preventing stress, depression and even dementia. It is also known to enhance confidence, empathy, decision-making, and overall life satisfaction.
What do you think is the reason for a large number of people dealing with mental illnesses today?
The biggest challenge is that we as parents as well as the schools primarily focus on developing a child’s IQ rather than the EQ, which is often neglected. Children are not necessarily trained to express emotions or deal with challenges and failures. The nuclear family system makes the whole situation even worse. If both parents are working, the child’s self-image is pretty much left to the child caretaker to develop.
What would your advice be to a person going through a rough time in their life?
“Do not hesitate to seek help!” You see for the slightest of illness, aches and pains we run to the general physician for medication. We immediately nurse the smallest of injuries. But unfortunately, we often ignore emotional hurts and leave them unattended for long periods of time since they are not visible to others and us. And one of the major causes of depression is unexpressed negative emotion.
People today are dealing with a lot of stress, what daily rituals can they follow to get into a state of calm?
Practice P. E. A. C. E. Daily!
Peace is the absence of mental stress or anxiety, a state of calmness that comes when everything coexists in perfect harmony. Follow these daily rituals to keep yourself in a peaceful state.
Practice Mindfulness
By slowing down and getting aware of what is in and around us, we can bring peace and joy to ourselves and others. You could do this by coloring a mandala, reading scripture, listening to healing music, or simply sitting in stillness.
Express Your Emotions
Most of us keep our negative emotions locked inside us and tell ourselves, “I shouldn’t feel this way!” We judge our emotions and stop ourselves from experiencing them. These bottled-up emotions eventually show up in our bodies as psychosomatic diseases. Venting your feelings in an imaginary letter can help you maintain emotional balance. The more you do it, the easier life will be for you. You will get rid of all the clutter in your head, and you will be able to think clearly about your life.
Appreciate Yourself And Others
Gratitude is vital to joy, and joy is crucial to success. You can set the tone for the whole day by intentionally giving just five minutes of your time to acknowledge and appreciate all the good things in your life.
Celebrate Small Wins Daily
Be highly intentional and deliberate about ‘celebrating all your wins’ and rewarding yourself for them daily. And each time you do that, you will send a positive reinforcement to your brain, motivating it to recreate the desired winning behavior.
Engage In Joyful “Me-Time” Activities
Take care of yourself by making time for doing things you love to do. Frustrating and neglecting yourself in the pursuit of making everyone else happy is neither going to serve you nor them in the long run. There is a difference in being there for others, from a position of duty versus a position of love and genuine care.
What are your priorities for social work especially for women empowerment?
I strongly believe that economic empowerment of women equates to the economic growth of a nation and so, as a member of Rotary, and Network Of Caring, I am contributing both time and money towards projects meant to empower women not just in India, but across the globe.
Who inspired you the most in your life?
It was Joyce Meyer.
In the fourth year of my fight against depression, I was introduced to self-help books. Truth be told, I had never been a reader. All I ever read were textbooks from school. I did understand novels, but self-help books – what are they? I had no clue! Reluctantly, I started reading the first book. To my surprise, I loved it so much that I got hooked on to reading. That year I read near 300 books, almost a book a day.
Finally, I found a book called Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer. The book’s message urged me to look up Joyce on Google and, I came across a YouTube recording of her women’s conference. I started watching the video hoping to get answers to the questions in my mind. Somewhere around the 40-minute mark, one lady in the audience raised her hand to ask a question. To my surprise, she asked Joyce the exact “Why Me” question that had been playing in my mind for over three years. I jumped on my seat eagerly, waiting to hear Joyce’s response, and then Joyce said something that changed the entire course of my life!
She said to the lady, “You hurt; you heal, you help.”
She explained to that lady that you are the chosen one. God has a plan for your life. He has faith in your ability to bounce back from this adversity, and when you do, you can be his channel to help others do the same.
Those words from Joyce changed the whole trajectory of my life. Rather than viewing myself as a victim, I started seeing myself as a hero, a protagonist! I knew there was a huge calling in my life. I was going to help others with my experience. And at that moment, I resolved to turn my life around.
You have achieved many prestigious awards for excellent work. What is the importance of these awards in your life?
Throughout my career, I have mentored tens of thousands of entrepreneurs and other global achievers through private programs, mastermind groups, and one-on-one coaching. I have continued to refine and integrate over two decades of high- achievement distinctions, principles, and insights into a well-structured learning system called The Game Of Life® and Health Talk World. The awards are a testimony for my work and all that I stand for.
You are always fit and energetic. What is the secret behind your fitness?
I am a huge proponent for healthy living and lifestyle. I eat healthy home cooked meals with 50% of my food plate being vegetables, I snack only on fruits, nuts, seeds, bhuna chana, or makhana, drink 10 glasses of water every day, walk 10,000 steps daily, sleep 7-9 hours every day, eat as per the circadian rhythm of the body (eat breakfast at sunrise and dinner with the sunset), and plug the nutrition gap with whole food supplements like plant protein, multivitamin multimineral and omega-3, to name a few.
